Merchants of Joy
Synopsis
Every year, like clockwork, hundreds of thousands of Christmas trees appear seemingly overnight on New York City’s streets. There’s an entire hidden universe of “tree people” set up to dole out holiday magic. They call themselves The Merchants of Joy. Here comes a delightfully festive feature documentary following five NYC Christmas tree dynasties over one rollercoaster year. Both holiday die-hards and street corner capitalists, they live and breathe their work: sourcing, bargaining, and hustling to sell as many trees as they can in the city that never sleeps. Colorful and absurd, hilarious and heartwarming, this character-driven portrait is both a twisty-turny workplace drama about a dysfunctional Christmas “family” — and a loving ode to the most celebrated holiday in the world.
